Life & Technology – 2GB 25th February, 2023

On the show this week, we invited Naren Gangavarapu, Chief Information Officer, Northern Beaches Council who talked about the Space X powered satellite broadband to be a game changer for the Northern beaches Community.

ouncil has just signed a game-changing deal that will see our internet connection provided by Starlink satellite (engineered by  SpaceX– which was formed by entrepreneur Elon Musk).

We will be the first council and first government agency in NSW to access the Vocus Satellite – Starlink service (Australian distributor of Starlink).

Council is initially connecting 37 sites including childcare centres, Surf Life Saving Clubs, community centres and libraries.

This is really a story about resilience and future-proofing.  Recent storms and flood emergencies have reminded us of the need to plan and prepare for future challenges – we need to ensure our teams remain operational in times of crisis, childcare centres can contact parents and families, and our surf lifesaving clubs and community centres can continue to provide critical services to the community.  Satellite broadband doesn’t require cables or fibre optics that can be disrupted during floods and fires.

We also invited Matt Williams, Managing Director from Optus who discussed about Optus’ Mobile and Internet Boost.

  • Optus unveils mobile and data service, Optus Internet Boost and Mobile Boost, giving you the power to boost on demand
  • When Australians were surveyed about what mattered for a happy home, more than half value high-speed internet over having a clean house (54%) and almost two-thirds of Australians prioritise high-speed internet over their weekly laundry (63%)
  • With a third of Aussies using their mobile and internet data for streaming movies, Optus Boost products are innovations that are giving Aussies customised on-demand options that suit their lifestyle and budget
