The way it works: It allows householders to rent out a bed, room or their entire house to visitors for various periods of time. So some hosts are earning thousands of dollars a year. If you've got a spare room in your place – you can rent it our for a price per night, and make lots of money that way, as opposed to having a 'room mate' as such who contributes to the weekly rent.Airbnb has 500,000 listings in 34,000 cities, including tree houses and castles. SELL AND LICENCE YOUR PHOTOS

You can join photo companies like Flickr, Getty Images and iStock and sell and licence your photos through them. You usually need to become a member of these companies first – it takes a moment and won't cost you a thing. Then you can apply to be a contributer and upload samples of your work.  Here are some examples of sites where you can sell your photos:

iSTOCK pays contributors a base royalty rate of 15% of each file download. If youy are an exclusive contributor you can earn up to 45%

FLICKR COLLECTION ON GETTY IMAGES: In 2010 Flickr and Getty Images joined forces to create a platform that allowed users to sell their images as royalty free and rights managed stock photos, so now we have the best of both worlds – image sharing and stock sales all in one place. Join by submitting your best work to the Getty Images Call for Artists Group on Flickr and wait for the editors to approve you, then you can start earning 20% royalty on your purchased photos.

SHUTTERSTOCK: With paid contributors for more than 350 million image downloads, Shutterstock is a great microstock website to sell your work – we love the brilliant multidimensional search engines. If you're new to selling your images as stock, be sure to check out their free Contributor Success Guide which has some very handy tips. With Shutterstock you'll earn between $0.25 and $28 each time an image of yours sells, depending on the licence.
