Today Show – Password Protection

Spoke with Lisa Wilkinson this morning about protecting your password. The way I see it is that no matter who you are, or how well you think you are protected, the bad guys are always going to try and hack into your account to get your information. Your job is to make their job as hard as possible.

There are several ways you can do this. First of all, make sure your password characters are between 6-14 characters long. You need at least that many to increase the variables. Also, mix it up with various numbers, letters and symbols – even cap some of the letters. Change passwords every three to six months. Make sure you don’t use easily traceable things such as birthdays, anniversaries and childrens’ names.

Although it was mentioned on the show to write your password on a piece of paper, I think I need to clarify this a bit. I personally do not write passwords on paper, and it is a little habit I would not encourage. What I was trying to spruik is that you don’t have an electronic version of your password anywhere on your computer.

A lot of this is all common sense, but I am just reinforcing what any good security expert would tell you to do. Criminals are out there 24/7 trying to get your personal info for nefarious means.
