Today Show – Chrome Computing

Spoke with Karl this morning on the new chrome computing being touted by Google that will be hitting the shelves in a series of new PCs that will be coming out later this year.

So what is it all about? In layman’s terms you basically don’t save anything to your computer. Your PC acts like a conduit as opposed to a stand-alone device. There are pros and cons to this.

The Pros:

  • The price – they will be a lot cheaper.
  • Eco-friendly – the insides of your computer won’t have as much hardware as a computer with a hard drive
  • Storage – you save everything to the cloud instead of a hard drive, so if your computer has a catastrophic failure or is lost/stolen, you can download your files

The Cons

  • Possible security issues if files are on the cloud
  • A third-party has your data
  • You need an internet connection because files are saved online
  • You will have to learn of a new way to use your computer

Is this the future of computing? I don’t know. Like any new technology, people have to get used to the idea, but I feel that the classic hard drive will be around for a while.
