Life & Technology – 2GB 13th September, 2015

Apple held one of it's big events this week, and made a LOT of announcements. Here's a link to everything that's new:

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus

Apple TV

iPad Pro

iPad mini 4

New Apple Watch colours, straps and operating system

iOS 9

OS X El Capitan

I spoke to Adrian Wood, Director of Whitehack, about the risks of charging your smartphone using a public kiosk. It’s not as safe as you think! For the full interview, take a listen to the podcast!

Vodafone kicked the week off its week with some big news, a big new 15GB phone plan for AUD$130 per month. If you sign up before November 3, you’ll get a bonus 5GB, taking you to a massive 20GB per month. You also get unlimited talk and text, and access to Vodafone’s AUD$5 per day roaming – probably my favourite thing about Vodafone.

It didn’t take long for others to follow suite: just two days after, Optus announced its own super-sized plan. Optus is offering 16GB of data for AUD$135 per month, and you’ll get a bonus 4GB if you sign up before December. Again, that’s a massive 20GB.

Netgear’s just announced a super powerful, super-fast new modem router it calls the Nighthawk X4S. The router’s claim to fame is that it’s the first device on the market to feature both MU-MIMO and Quad-Stream Wi-Fi technologies. Essentially, what this means is it’s very fast.

Samsung’s brand new flagship tablet will be available from Tuesday – it comes in two different sizes, 8-inch and 9.7-inch, both with a distinctly iPad-like 4:3 aspect ratio. The new aspect ratio means the new tablets are a little more balanced, and work great whether you’re streaming on Stan or trying to get some work done.

They’re also incredibly light –  both 8-inch and 9.7-inch Galaxy Tab S2 models have been trimmed down to 5.6mm in thickness, and weigh 265g and 389g respectively. The 8-inch tablet starts at AUD$499, while the 9.7-inch starts at AUD$599, and you’ll be able to get them at our sponsor Harvey Norman
