Facebook Rides Roughshod Over SMS

Facebook is launching a new application that will allow you to aggregate your mobile phone and contacts into one. This means if you send a message via Facebook Messenger, and they are not on Facebook, it will send the message to their smartphone.

Will this see the end of the SMSing? Not in the near future, but in five or 10 years, as the younger generation who have adopted this technology get older, then this type of thing might become the norm.

Does that mean Optus and Telstra et al have to worry about losing revenue? Not in the short term, and let’s face it, even though the official rate for texts is about $0.25, most people have contracts that give them a lot more bang for their buck.
